The amazing Tony Pellicane

Boy is this a cool picture. My guess is that Tony caught a burn diving to his left and has just released a right-handed backhand. His partner John Greensage hasn't touched the lead shot yet, so they have made a successful escape.

A good front can do a lot in a short period of time, for example, while they're airborne. Tony probably caught the burn upside-down with his thumbs down, which makes it easy to flip up into a backhand since the grip is already set. He probably also got his shirt tucked in before he landed.
